Road Trips and Explosions

Scrivener December 14th, 2007

Tickets for the next Wilco tour go on sale tomorrow morning, but they are not coming to Atlanta, dammit. So Beth and I are going to do a pair of roadtrips: on Fri, Feb 29 we’ll head to Charleston to catch them there, then Sunday we’ll head to Nashville since Nashville sold out within 5 minutes, we’ll head to Mobile on Monday. Neither of us has gone on a roadtrip to see a band in a long time, so it should be fun.

Also, I found out that Explosions in the Sky is going to be playing in Atlanta two days before my birthday in April. Finally, they’re coming to Atlanta. I really like Explosions in the Sky even though I wouldn’t call them a favorite band, but they are somewhere near the top of my list of bands that I’ve been wanting to see live.

According to their site, after June they “plan on dropping off the face of the earth for awhile so these will probably be [their] last shows for quite some time.” I’ve heard they’re amazing live and I saw them on Austin CIty Limits–the Decemberists had the first half of the show and then EitS came on. The two bands are almost exact polar opposites: EitS play all instrumental rock, and they pretty much never say a word in concert, just walk onto the stage and play, with one song flowing seamlessly into the next for the entire set. On Austin City Limits, they played without pause for the entire set, just song-song-song-song-”thanks!” and they’re gone. I loved their set–almost hypnotic rock. Honestly, at least on that program, I thought they blew the Decemberists away. Maybe that’s just because I’ve seen the Decemberists so many times or because of what kind of mood I was in then

So, I’m thinking that I’m calling this the birthday party the band is throwing for me. Scrivener’s Birthday Explosion in the Sky. Anyone want to come to my birthday party in four months? Tickets are $13!
