Pretty much on the spur of the moment, I decided to take the kids camping on this last weekend with me before school starts. We went up to Fort Mountain State Park, which was nice, though I was a little disappointed that the walk-in campsites were in the same campground as the pull-in sites, so we were just across the street from the RVs. But by Sunday morning, everyone else had left and we pretty much had the campground to ourselves Sunday and Monday.

The kids and I did some hiking, I took them out on the lake in a canoe, and we swam in the lake. I helped Eldest learn to do back flips into the lake. And we enjoyed cooking at the campsite, followed by s’mores, always a favorite with the kids. This time, for the first time, the kids were willing to let me get out of the tent once they went to sleep so I got to spend some time staring into the campfire in the dark thinking about everything and nothing. I wished I had brought my guitar to play around the fire, but I hadn’t expected to have the chance to play it. Next time.

This looks like fun. When my little boys are a bit older I want to do this again. There is that window of opportunity when they are old enough to let go some but young enough to stay put.

it sounds good – and I like the picture and the bokeh and the beer bottle neck

We’ve been there twice and yeah…the walk-in campsites are pretty disappointing. Still, not a terrible place to get a way and not too far from home.
