Early Morning Address to a Tree Called “Green”
I did you, Sir, a bitter wrong last night.
I could not sleep: so deafening was the wind.
When I looked out, I noticed you were swaying
Like a drunk monkey. I was ashamed for you, Green.
Let me simply confess I was mistaken:
You were fighting the bitterest battle of your life.
Vultures were getting interested in you.
Now you know your worth, Green.
Today the yellow sun is shining on your naked boughs
But you’re still shaking the tears off, aren’t you, Green?
You’re rather alone, aren’t you, Green?
Mass civilization isn’t for us, is it?
I was able to get some sleep, Sir, after I’d seen you.
But you must feel tired today, no?
Forgive my idle chatter.
It was after all no small achievement to get up so high
Between the houses
Up so high that the storm can reach you,
Green, like last night?
-Bertolt Brecht.
