You can talk about nothing with an absolute
certainty Wittgenstein would’ve killed for.
We were driving out of town, the top
down, the age of convictions almost behind us.
Wittgenstein had said that it is only
possible to wonder at things if we can
conceive of them not being what they are.
Staring at the invisible water, we wondered
at the size of the world in the dark.
We wondered at the dark itself,
not imagining for a moment that nothing else
would’ve been conceivable.

–lines from “An Absolute Certainty” by Dionisio D. Martinez

I love the quote and it’s perfect for the photo.

Thanks. I actually took the photo specifically in response to the poem. I’m going to try, for National Poetry Month, to take all of my portraits with a specific poem in mind. I doubt that they’ll all respond directly, but the goal will be to have a poem inform each photo in some way. I came up with this idea on the fly on Tuesday and have no idea how it will play out or whether it will continue to be interesting at all. I’m already finding that it makes taking the photos a little more difficult but I’m curious to see what happens.

This is a cool idea, Scriv…add a little juice to the creative, selfie process. I love this image and its lighting. It’s amazing that you got yourself to be *just barely* visible.
