Good things for Monday

Scrivener March 10th, 2008

  • I’m finally feeling better. That drug-resistant strep kicked my ass last week, but once they put me on a stronger antibiotic on Saturday, I improved quickly. I’ll take the really bad, metallic taste in my mouth that seems to be a side effect of this antibiotic over the fever of 103 and the throat so sore that I couldn’t eat solid food for 5 days.
  • Today I got the girls, we came home, and they helped me make burgers for dinner–what sold them was when I promised we could make shakes too. Eldest made a strawberry shake and Youngest had chocolate. At the end of dinner they toasted me with what was left in their glasses and told me that I am the “perfect daddy” for making them ice cream shakes.
  • Yesterday, Ex had Eldest for a few hours in the afternoon while I had time alone with Youngest. We went to the bookstore and I read her a bunch of books, and she didn’t even fight with me at all when we left without buying anything. Then we headed to the playground and I spent a full hour chasing her all over the place. She just never got tired of either racing against each other or telling me to chase her and running away. We were both wiped out by the time we got home.
  • When Eldest got home yesterday, the three of us played Monopoly. Eldest is now making change in her head with no problem at all. She spent the entire game coming up with different ways to pay for properties or rent, trying to come up with some way that she would get change in each transaction.
  • I just can’t believe how quickly Eldest has improved with her reading. She always has a couple of books with her these days. Usually when she’s in the car with me, she’s in the backseat reading some sort of chapter book. At church, she can now read fast enough to follow along in the hymnal and sing the words. We’re reading Harry Potter right now, and she’s got a fairly long list of books that should all be next.
  • Eldest has been taking keyboard lessons for about a month now. For the first two weeks, there was enough turmoil in general that she didn’t get much practice time in. Starting two weeks ago, she and I talked about it and decided that she should practice either right before or right after doing her homework, so she’s been practicing pretty much every day–often both before and after doing her homework. She’s improved so much in two weeks.

Sorry you were sick, glad you are better. Those girls of yours are very impressive. I could never get mine to practice their music for anything. The younger is still taking guitar but only practices about five minutes a week. I hate to pull the plug because I adore her teacher.

I just kicked strep throat too. Now every single person living at home in our family has got it. We’ve now made a record five trips to the doctor in the span of ten days and have spent way too much on antibiotics. Glad you are getting better.

And I think there is nothing quite as staisfying as watching a child read (only to be outdone by watching a child sleep). :)

Oh, I’m sorry you got sick, but good thing you’re feeling better now.

I’m thrilled about E’s progress both in reading and playing the keyboard. I want to get Kelvin to take piano lessons even though *I* teach piano — obviously it won’t work for me to teach him.
