85: Spring has Sprung

Scrivener March 26th, 2007

Spring has Sprung, originally uploaded by Scrivenings.

I took this picture yesterday afternoon, but since my picture for yesterday was taken just after midnight the night before (technically, then, very early yesterday morning), I’m just counting it as today’s picture and then I’ll get back onto schedule with tomorrow’s pic.

I feel like I entered into some version of the big leagues with these shots, because, like Billie, security showed up and told me that I couldn’t take pictures of my daughters at the shopping center. The guy didn’t escort me out or anything, just mumbled something about me being a security threat and then drove away in his little golf cart.

Absurd. It drives me nuts that we’re increasingly living in a police state–except that really this is about the average Joe flexing some muscle to make himself feel like his shopping center security job is somehow meaningful. Not that I wish it to be you, but I hope that someone eventually takes these people to court on these issues and wins, so that we can be free to photograph our our beautiful daughters hanging off of some lovely cherry trees (or whatever kind of tree it is).

Hey, I got here via julieunplugged and beth…friends of mine.

I really like your shots of the family. You are able to capture an essense of the “personality” of everyone, even yourself. :-)

Why in the world couldn’t you take photos of your girls at the mall? I dislike malls very much and now I have one more reason for why I dislike them. ;-)

    Beautiful picture.

And I totally agree with what Ianqui said.

Ianqui: I agree with you entirely. I think the guy was simply trying to be self-important by telling me not to take pictures. If he would have stuck around and continued talking to me, I would have worked myself into being more angry and eventually would have asked for his supervisor’s information so I could verify that this is an actual policy of the stores. But he just told me to stop and then drove away, so I ended up going through it in my head, and by then I was much more willing to just blow it off and not get too upset. As he pulled away I almost yelled after him to ask his justification for infringing on my freedom of speech, but then I figured there was little point in trying to have that conversation with some security guard just trying to feel big.

Susan & RevDrMom: Thanks! I feel like my photographs have really improved a lot in the last month or so, and it’s good to get some external validation. :)

    What Ianqui said.

But did the golf-card driving guy know that these were YOUR kids? I can understand security stopping some random guy taking pictures of children in a shopping center, but if they are YOUR children???? That’s just nuts.

Your candids of your girls are wonderful. This one is so nice, with the movement of the hair, and the upwards perspective. Really great. The blooms on the tree don’t hurt the shot either :) .
